The NEW YORK AND CUBA MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY operated under various names from 1841-1954. It's specialty was mail, cargo and passenger transport from NYC to the Mexican Gulf ports, Nassau and Cuba. It was very successful until a series of mishaps starting in the 1930's with a fire aboard one of it's newest ships the SS Morro Castle in 1934 that killed more than 130 passengers, to date still the most casualties involving an American passenger ship. The SS ORIZABA and th...e SS SIBONEY were sister ships built in 1918 and immediately requisitioned by the US Navy to wartime duty as troop transport ships when the US joined the allies in WW1. They each regularly transported more than 3000 troops across the Atlantic during the 2 years or so that they were controlled by the US government. The SIBONEY made about 17 round trips and the ORIZABA about 15. They were returned to their owners in 1920 and then requisitioned again in 1941 for WW11 where they continued as troop transports and in the case of the SIBONEY later as a hospital ship. Both ships had a displacement of about 11300 tons, a length of 443 ft and a beam of 60 ft with a speed of between 16-18 knots. The speed varied even more after they were converted for military use, depending on cargo, troop complement and design changes required by their new use.SS ORIZABA survived from 1918 until 1963 and the SS SIBONEY from 1918 until 1957.The document for sale measures 17" x 27.5" opened and 3.5" x 8.75" folded.
