Very rare and beautiful, ca1890’s Native American Sioux Indian Diminutive Size Bead Decorated Hide Pouch (sometimes called a “Peyote Pouch”). This outstanding late 19th century Sioux Beaded Pouch measures approx. 3" long overall and 3” wide including the short, hand cut rawhide fringe.
This wonderful Sioux Pouch is sinew sewn of what appears to be buffalo hide. The front of the Pouch features “tracks” style beadwork in chalk white and pea green c...olors surrounded by a single lane border using chalk white, pea green and cobalt blue colors. The back side features a single land border of pea green seed beads. The Pouch retains its original rawhide hanger and features a short, hand cut, rawhide fringe.
This Bag was recently deaccessioned from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and was sold to benefit the Center’s acquisition fund.
The Sioux Beaded Pouch offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Native American Beaded Pouch craft in the late 19th century. This very rare and original, ca1890’s Diminutive Size, Sioux Bead Decorated Pouch is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved - supple and sound with no damage or repairs but with soiling and some surface wear as seen in the scans below. The beadwork is well preserved with no loss or damage. The Bag retains its original, rawhide loop hanger. All elements of the Bag are original and there has been no repairs or restorations.
