Antique fine Russian silver small (approx. 13/16" tall with bale) Orthodox medal pendant featuring icons of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus known as "Our Lady of Chernigov" and Saint Theodosius of Chernigov on the other side (please see the last picture for a reference). The medal is made in solid silver. It bears the "84" old Russian silverhallmark, the Imperial Russian "Kokoshnik" mark print, and atwo-letter maker's mark (highlighted on a p...icture). The initials of the maker, "ГT"("GT") might belong to a 19th century silversmith G. Tokmakov. Origin likely c. late 19th - early 20th centuryImperial Russia. The medal shows signs of wear due to its age anddevotional wearing, including reduced quality of artwork, deformations of the original shape, scratches, dents and patches of dark silverpatina. The inside of the necklace bale shows signs of wear consistent withlong wearing. The size and weight of the medal are shown on the photographs forthis listing.The obverse bears an image of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus as painted on the venerated Orthodox icon known as the "Our Lady of Chernigov" ("Chernigovskaya Mother of God"). The bottom part of the medal shows an abbreviated inscription in Church Slavonic meaning "ICON OF CHERNIGOVSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD". The icon belongs to the "Hodegetria" type (translates from Greek as "She who shows the Way"). This is an ancient iconographic depiction of Mary holding the Child Jesus at Her side while pointing to Him as the Way to salvation for humankind. Chernigov was a historic city of the ancient Kievan Rus' known since the 9th century, and then a part of the Russian Empire (now Chernihiv in modern Ukraine). The reverse displays an icon of Saint ("Venerable" in the Orthodox tradition) Theodosius of Chernigov, a 17th century Orthodox monk who became Archbishop of Chernigov.Please examine all photographs carefully and do your own research if necessary.
