Antique RPPC Owego, NY 1915 Saloon W/Coin Op Vender, Minstrel Show Ad, Posted
Item History & Price
What we have here is an old real photo postcard (RPPC) of a bar in Owego, New York in 1915.
There are a lot of impressive details in this photograph. On the counter, on the corner, is a coin-operated vender/vending machine of some sort (peanuts or gum or chocolate-- it's unclear). There are several men standing around in the photograph. From left to right we see what looks to be the propreitor, a bartender/clerk, then we have a rather sullen-looking working-class cust...omer with a hat and a cigarette. He's got a good look. Not gonna lie.
As far as ads and signs go, from left to right we see:* Feigenspans' P.O.N. Amber Ale* Canandaigua High Hopped Ale* Honest Scrap* [An Unknown Whiskey Sign]* An ad for Sweet Cider* Haberle Brewing Company Bock Beer* An ad for "Work Received Here"* Chatfield & Company (this seems to be a department store or a haberdashery of some sort)* An ad for pool & bowling* Most importantly: There is an ad for a freakin' minstrel show. Woof. Some of the sign is cut off by the edge of the photograph, but what we can see reads as follows:
"Our Boys"Big MinstrelThe Home For Aged
And the Owego Ba[nd]Mon-Tues April 8Tigga Theater
There is a letter on the back written to a Mrs. Leman [?] Johnson in Nichols, New York. The letter is written in fountain pen and was written on May 25 (apparently) by Mary.
And, hey, good news, the bar is still in Owego, New York. It is currently the "Cellar Restaurant" on 196 Front St, Owego, NY 13827. The fancy back bar is still visible in many of the photographs of the bar. So, that's cool! A big deal if you're from Owego or a collector of old upstate New York stuff.
Overall, a great, original postcard of an interesting time in American history. As with all of my photos and postcards, this is an original. It is not a reproduction or a fake or copy or anything else. It's the real McCoy! The same goes for the stamp!
