Stanley No 4 Smooth Plane Type 16 1933-41 Near Mint Tuned. Dated 1938 as it has “138” stamped on the back of the iron dating it to first quarter of 1938. Super clean near mint, everything original, 99% original black japanning. No breaks cracks chips or repairs to the body or frog. The Rosewood tote and knob are free of cracks chips or repairs and retain their original finish, they have been hand polished to a silky smooth feel. 99% nickel plating on the lever cap. The frog adjustm...ent tab and screw retain their original gun blue finish. Iron still has its factory grind. This one has been tuned and is ready to use. Set up as a smoother the iron has had the edges relieved to prevent those pesky plane tracks. Sole has been lapped and checked at the toe mouth and heel. The edges of the sole have been relieved to prevent marring of the finished surface. Lever cap and chip breaker have been lapped at their contact points with the iron to ensure a firm seat and reduce chatter. The full length iron has been lapped flat on the back and then honed with a 10, 000 grit Ohishi Water Stone. Tested in black cherry and leaves a smooth as glass finish with see through shavings.
