This is a wonderful c1920s studio portrait of an adorable little blonde girl, perhaps four years old, in traditional Norwegian clothing holding two large flags--an American flag that is taller than she is and a Norwegian flag that is slightly smaller. The portrait is symbolic of how, like many early 20th century immigrants, this communitty wished to (or perhaps found it more strategic to) identify as Americans first, Norwegians second. This studio photographer, who had considerable skill, was undoubtedly deliberate in his use of the flags--the American flag being taller, held closer to the body, and held with the right hand. The child is almost certainly a first generation American.
