Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm F/2 Lens 17 Blade M42 Screw Mount
Item History & Price
I will ship next business day via USPS First Class mail with tracking.
For sale is a Carl Zeiss Jena 58mm f/2 Biotar lens in the M42 screw mount. The listing includes the lens itself and a hard plastic rear screw-on cap marked "TAKUMAR Japan." There is no front cap.
It is a manual focus lens. It also has a manual aperture control system (does... not have an automatic aperture diaphragm like modern lenses).
This is the more desirable 17 blade version (17 individual aperture blades).
This is compatible with the Contax S and D model early screw mount SLR cameras and the successor Pentacon and Praktica models. The M42 was also used in some Pentax SLR cameras and other cameras. There are also many adapters available to use M42 lenses with various mirrorless digital cameras. Please consult technical information available online to determine how this lens would work with your specific camera.
This is a small, compact, and lightweight lens. It weighs only 5 ounces.
If you are obsessed with having a 100% "perfect" lens, this is not the one for you.
As with lenses of this vintage, there is internal and external dust, debris, haze and other imperfections, including light scratching / marring on the front element. There are also "bubbles" in the glass, which again is common for this era of lenses -- it came that way from the factory.
Please assume the lens is to be cleaned or "CLA'd." I have taken many pictures to try to accentuate the imperfections in the interest of full disclosure.
The aperture ring appears to be "misaligned." The aperture ring functions properly, but the marking will indicate around f/3-3.5 when in reality the aperture is wide open to f/2. Similarly, when the aperture is closed down to f/22, the ring indicate a mark far to the left of f/22. This could indicate that the lens was disassembled by a prior owner for maintenance / cleaning. It seems like it would a simple fix to remove the ring and re-seat it in the correct location. Again, it does not practically affect the operation of the aperture system. The pictures in this listing illustrate what I am describing.
The focus ring moves freely, but there is some resistance. It could use some professional lubrication.
The aperture ring moves freely and smoothy. Unlike modern lenses, this lens does not have "click stops" for the aperture settings. This lens operates more like modern "cine" lenses.
I have tried to describe everything as accurately as I could and to the best of my ability. If you have any questions, please send me a message. I will respond promptly.
As with all my auctions, I am offering this item in AS-IS condition. I provide no warranties, explicit or implied. I do not accept returns.
