Cadell, 1788, First Edition, Two Volumes.Approximately 9 inchestall.Two volumes complete in anattractive half leather binding with green title labels to the spine, marbledboards and page edges, foxing throughout. Bookplate for CWH Sothebyto both volumes.First edition of HesterThrale Piozzi’s significant selection of Dr. Johnson’s letters. Samuel Johnsononce hailed Hester Thrale, later Piozzi, as "if not the wisest woman inthe world undoubtedly one of the wisest" (Allibone, 1601). She met him in 1765; hebecame a frequent houseguest, and she "was flattered by the attentions ofthis literary lion who took her sufficiently seriously as a poet not only topraise and criticize her efforts but also to suggest collaboration. WithJohnson she was soon translating Boethius's Consolations of Philosophy. Sheassisted him in the preparation of his Journey to the Western Islands, andJohnson acknowledged that several of the lives in his Lives of the Poets owedas much to her conversation as to her skills as amanuensis.Vol I – title, xv, [1], 397pp;Vol II – title, xi, [1], 424pp.Approximately 9 inchestall.
