1676 1st ed Clarendon Survey of LEVIATHAN Thomas Hobbes Political Philosophy Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon published an important and fascinating rebuke of Thomas Hobbes’s famous work ‘Leviathan’. Clarendon formed this book as a critique, but the work in unquestionable an attack on Hobbes’s book. According to Zagorin, “‘Survey’ is a book of considerable merit and interest…and is the longest, most general statement of political philosophy that Clarendon left.”It ...was in this work that Clarendon decisively formulated that ‘Leviathan’ favored the domination of the usurping government that overthrew the king, and furthermore, that Hobbes had written this work in order to make his return to England from exile. (Zagorin). Over half of ‘Survey’ deals with politics and religion discussions found in ‘Leviathan’. Clarendon focuses on Hobbesian views of sedition, treason, and impiety, even though Clarendon shared some of the views that Hobbes held. Though it should be noted that Clarendon claimed Hobbes to be “so ignorant of the law and constitution of England that he was incompetent to judge political affairs.” This rare first edition was published in July 1676, as stated on the verso of the title page, dedicated to King Charles II.
