YoungAnno Domini 1628 A large handsome volume, rebacked with leather spine and leather boards retained. Measuring approx 33.5cm x 23.5cm x 9.5cm. Six raised bands, gilt ruled bands and gilt titles to spine. Occasional scuffs and scratches to boards. Repairs to corners and a little to edges. A handsome volume. Internally there are more recent endpapers to front and rear, with reinforced strip to inner edges. Endpapers touch wrinkled and marked. Faint pencil to front endpaper. Ink name to title page (Charles Dormer). Pale staining and a couple of creases to edges of first couple of leaves. The title page is a touch grubby and has a corner chip. Repaired tear to bottom edge of first page of preface. One of the maps has some spotting (see photos). Corner chip to couple of leaves. Occasional pale mark and spots. Lacking additional engraved title page. Odd crease, else in lovely, clean and tight condition for age There are 6 double page maps, and 2 double page battle plans, a couple of pedigrees, and several tables.
Upon his return from America, Walter Raleigh the famous English explorer, was arrested and imprisoned by King James I, with whom he was highly unpopular. It was during his imprisonment in the Tower of London, that he embarked on this iconic work, 'He intended to outline historical events from creation to modern times, drawing on the Bible, Greek mythology, and other sources."
