With a tipped in PRINTED (in my view) signature of Arthur Conan Doyle on a slip of paper to the titlepage. Second Edition stated onthe title page. Original light blue binding, a heavily worn copy, titles ingilt and with some wear, with pristine book box for protection. There were only twoeditions of this title. 317pp.Approximately 9 ½ inchestall. ConditionReportExternallySpine – good condition – faded, worn and wrinkled, black title on gilt label, also gilt author’s name and printer with gilt bands to the top and tail, bruised top and tail, there is an indentation over the Strand Library label.Joints – good condition – gently rubbed.Corners – good condition –bumped and worn.Boards – good condition – original light blue boards with gilt titles and author, black design of The Strand Library to the front board, board edges are bevelled, general signs of wear, book is protected by a pristine book box with gilt titles, 5 raised gilt edged bands.Page edges – good condition – all gilt.See above and photos.InternallyHinges – poor condition – both hinges are cracked and the webbing can be seen, holding.Paste downs – fair condition – patterned paste downs, there are some marks on both the front and rear paste downs where it looks like something has been stuck to them.End papers – good condition – patterned end papers, internal end papers are tanned and foxed.Title – good condition – tipped in PRINTED signature to the title page, lightly tanned with some foxing to the top right hand corner.Pages – good condition – illustrated throughout, small tear at the top right hand corner of page 89, tip of the page missing at the top right hand corner of page 91, pages are lightly tanned and foxed throughout, many pages showing marks and there is straining to the hinges throughout with webbing showing.Binding – fair condition – worn and slightly loose.See photosPublisher: see above.
