First edition of Marx's magnum opus
to be printed in the USA
New York: The Humboldt Publishing Company, ca. 1889. xviii, 506, (33, ads) pp. Original maroon buckram ruled in black, spine lettered in gilt, patterned endpapers. First thus. (Cloth single-volume issue published around the time of a four-volume paperback issu...e, priority unknown. Ads in rear dated June 1889; apparently various uncatalogued states of these ads exist, as do later printings by Humboldt with horizontal black-banded bindings and plain endpapers. Perhaps the second American edition [The Ahearns think it's more likely the first edition] but definitely the first to be actually printed in the USA. Draper 129. PMM 359.) About Very Good with dampstaining and discoloration to spine, corners slightly bumped and light rubbing along bottom edge of cloth, inexpert glue repair to hinge at front, a few marginal notes in easily-erasable pencil throughout. Gilt fairly bright.
A rare early American edition of Marx's groundbreaking work of political economy Das Kapital, a spark which would eventually ignite many of the largest conflagrations of the 20th century.
