Folio Society Limited Edition – THE GETTY APOCALYPSE [Unnumbered]In themid-13th century, as influential preachers predicted the end of the world, there was a surge in demand for illuminated manuscripts of Revelation, known asthe Apocalypse of John the Divine. Among the surviving manuscripts, one of thevery finest is held by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, here presented infacsimile for the first time. The GettyApocalypse exemplifies the best of the English school of the mid-13th cen...tury, and is an exceptional artistic achievement. Over 80 magnificent miniatures setin succession above the text create a glorious visual narrative, leading theviewer through the poetic, dramatic vision of the Apocalypse. They are amongstthe most beautiful of medieval miniatures: exquisitely delineated in tintedcolour embellished with gold and silver leaf. Each shows the hand of a masterartist possessed of an unerring sense of composition, a wonderful understandingof colour, and a rare ability to express emotion through gesture andexpression. A keyfeature of the Getty Apocalypse is its frequent use of historiated initials –42 in total – some using religious symbolism, but many primarily intended toentertain and amuse. Other Apocalypses had begun with a single historiatedinitial, and in the next century their use would become more widespread, butthe artist who created the Getty Apocalypse was a pioneer who delighted increating secular scenes. Here we find depictions of everything from acrobats toan Aesop’s fable.Allfacsimiles require technically demanding photography and digital reproduction, but this Apocalypse called upon specialist skills to reproduce the lavish useof gold and silver leaf with metallic foil, which has then been over-printed toreduce its glare and give it the effect of age. Other finishing touches includefolding and sewing the pages in ‘shuffled’ sections in order to reproduce theirregular finish, and hand-blocking the decoration on the spine in gold. Theresult is an impeccable facsimile of a medieval masterpiece. ProfessorNigel J. Morgan is the acknowledged expert on the English Apocalypse tradition, having spent many years studying manuscripts in major institutions across theWestern world. For the commentary volume created to accompany this facsimile hehas provided a full translation of the text and analysed the imagery in bothminiatures and historiated initials. He provides a full background to theApocalypse in medieval art, providing a context in which to appreciate itfully. The Getty manuscript is missing a few leaves at the end, and in thecommentary volume we have reproduced scenes from a related Apocalypse in theBritish Library. Also included are a number of illustrations from othermanuscripts, which reveal how the Getty is both part of a tradition and yethighly distinctive.PRODUCTION DETAILS:- Facsimile Volume Limitedto 1, 000 numbered copies Quarter-boundin Wassa Goatskin with vegetable parchment sides Printedand blocked in four foils with a design by David Eccles Printedon Furioso paper with gilded and shuffled page edges Ribbonmarker 92 pageswith 82 miniatures Booksize: 12¾" x 9"Commentary Volume Bound inbuckram 136 pages Presented in abuckram-bound solander box CONDITION: Both the bookand its commentary volume are UNREAD and in FINE condition.
