1907 MINIATURE 1ST EDITION ALICE ' S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. LEWIS CARROLL FIRST
Item History & Price
BY LEWIS CARROLL
WITH 42 ILLUSTRATIONS BY JOHN TENNIEL
1907 Miniature 1st edition, 1st printing of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published by Macmillan and Co. The date of publication is printed on the title page and on the reverse of the title page it states 'The First Edition of Alice's Adventures was published in 1865. The "Miniature Edition" appeared in 1907', with no further reprinting d...ates, proving it to be a 1st printing. It is bound in red cloth with gilt illustration of Alice and the Pig Baby to the front board and gilt title to the spine. The boards have some bumping to the corners and edges, also faint stains. The spine has darkened, but the gilt title is still fairly bright. There is slight tanning and some grubby marks to pages, but most pages are remarkably clean. The front endpaper has been neatly pasted to the front board and there is tanning to the rear endpaper. Slight cracking to the spine with webbing ever so slightly visible. No inscriptions or personalised bookplates. Overall, the condition is good and consistent with the age of the book, it is 103 years old and now considered antique. The Alice miniature editions are very appealing as they followed the same design style of covers to the original editions, just smaller. They make for a far more affordable, yet delightful option for collecting. Without handling these miniatures it is difficult to appreciate the charm of these compact books, which only measure 16 x 10 cm - it seems like they have taken one of Alice's potions to reduce their size in order to become small enough to pop into your pocket!
