For sale is a rare first issue/first edition of the original parts of The Pickwick Papers, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837. A complete suite of thirty-eight plates by Phiz, plus the two rare Buss plates at p.p. 69 and 74. 624p.p. Errata page present.Bound in near contemporary green morocco over marbled boards. Ornate tooling in gilt to the spine and bands. The title in gilt to a claret morocco label. Original marbled endpapers.Internally it is refreshing...ly clean to the text block, aside from occasional spotting to a few pages. The plates are among the brightest we have seen. The browning is heavier to the frontispiece and vignette, as is often the case.Externally the morocco is largely bright indeed, and sits smartly upon the shelf. Occasional shelfwear and rubbing, but this is to be expected.Overall, to find an example in the first edition of this title is indeed rare, particularly with the Buss plates present. Dickens' first published novel, this charming volume would grace any collection, and it comes very highly recommended.Should you have any questions relating to this item, please do not hesitate to contact us.
