Included in the auction is a reprint of the classic novel's original April 16, 1939 New York Times review by Peter Monro Jack; collector's notes on the book; and a copy of a 1943 Margaret Camp newspaper feature, "Memoirs of a Grape Picker, " illustrated by Gisella Loeffler.
Grapes of Wrath is listed as Modern Library's tenth best novel of all time. The Associated Farmers ofCalifornia dismissed the novel as a "pack of lies" and"communist propaganda". The book was briefly banned in the SovietUnion by Joseph Stalin, because the ruling Communist Party was troubled by thethought that it showed that even the most destitute Americans could afford acar. Steinbeck received death threats and the FBI put him under surveillance.The book was banned in many libraries and copies were symbolically burned intowns across America.
