Sir Robert Biddulph, was Governor General of Cyprus from 1879 to 1886, here he provides fascinating description of this Eurasian island country, its geography, agricultural prosperity, striking remains and ruins of ancients cities, the inhabitants - according to the author, in 1881 the population of Cyprus was 186000 of whom one-quarter were Mohametans, and the remainder of the Greek Church. With mentions of the picturesque town of Nicosia and its old fortifications, Famagusta, fort of Kyrenia, ruined castles of St. Hilarion, Buffa Vento, and Kantara, old monastery of Bellapais, church of the Holy Cross on top of the mountain of Santa Croce, ruined tomb of St. Barnabas, the old tower of Kolossi near Limassol, ruins of the site of Salamis, town of Larnaca, ancient port and citadel of Kitium, ancient monestaries of Kikko and Machera, and ruins from the Conquest of Cyprus by Richard Coeur de Lion. Also included here is some historical background, including the Turkish conquest in 1570.
