DESCRIPTIONColour illustrated title page with seventeen colour illustrated plates by John Leech.The character of Handley Cross was very popular among the public of the time and Surtees gained a reputation for creating comic personalities.James Pigg in the work is based on Joe Kirk, a Slaley huntsman. The famous incident, when Pigg jumps into the melon frame, was inspired by a similar episode involving Joe Kirk.
CONDITIONIn a cloth binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing and tidemarks to boards. Corners and head and tail of spine are bumped. Front board detached. Internally, firmly bound with scattered spotting to pages throughout.
