Kit Carson's Autobiography.-Edited by Milo Milton Quaife Secretary of The Burton Historical Collection.The Lakeside Classics.Maroon cloth with gold embossed Lakeside Press Publishing Emblem on front cover and title in gold lettering on spine.Published by The Lakeside Press, Chicago, R.R.Donnelley & Sons Co.Christmas 1935, First Lakeside Press Edition.Illustrated with two brownish-toned plates, 192 Pages.This is the original, First Lakeside Press 1935 Edition of the important Wester...n Americana book "Kit Carson's Autobiography"edited by Milo Milton Quaife.The original manuscript was in the Newberry Library and in 1935 the famous Lakeside Press decided to publish it in book form.The autobiography tells the story of the famous and modest frontiersman and his adventurous years on the Western plains and in the mountains.Carson tells about his early life, his years in Taos, New Mexico, adventures with the Indians in these regions, the fur trade, John C.Fremont, Bents Fort, trapping, the California expedition etc.Great early Western history as recalled by the famous Western scout, soldier and explorer Kit Carson.The book also has an index.The two illustrations are a frontispiece plate of Kit Carson and a reproduction of a page from his original manuscript "Carson's Story of his Fight with Shunar".Actual book size is 4 1/4 by 6 3/4 inches.Condition is very good a nice, tight, complete and essentially clean book.Some fading to covers, Lakeside Press logo on cover is still bright and attractive, some light smudging and dustiness to covers.More pronounced fading to spine cloth with title lettering on spine quite faded but still legible.Light wear to cover boards with some bumping and fraying to cover board corners.Fraying to top and bottom of spine tips.Front and rear inner hinges are tight and all interior pages are tight and intact.The interior pages are essentially clean with some occasional light smudging and dustiness.The two plates are still attractive and have their tissue guards intact.There is considerable browning to the front and rear endpapers and to the blank pages following.The right front endpaper has a previous owners name in black ink and a date of "10/3/93".No dustjacket as issued.The book is in quite collectible condition.This original 1935, First Lakeside Press edition of "Kit Carson's Autobiography"would make a nice addition to your Western Americana library and the book would also be a nice addition to your early Lakeside Press book collection.
