This is one of a series of reprints of classic works illustrating the cultural and intellectual life of Scotland during one of its most creative and dynamic periods: the second half of the eighteenth century.
Peter Williamson was born in Aboyne, Abedeenshire, in 1730. At the age ...of ten he was kidnapped by a merchant and sold into indentitures in Pennsylvania. Luckily, it was a compatriot from Perth that bought him. This kindly farmer treated him well for the first seven years of his term, but he died just as they ended. Soon afterwards Williamson was captured by Indians allied with the French in the North American campaigns of the Seven Years' War. He escaped and made his way to his father-in-law's house, only to find that his wife had died. He then joined the army, serving mainly with the unsuccessful defence of an outpost on Lake Ontario. After the garrison surrendered to General Montcalm, the prisoners were repatriated. Williamson went home to Aberdeen where he wrote this book, which first appeared in 1757.
The book went through several editions, often with new material. The fifth edition of 1762 has been selected for reprinting because it contains large improvements and appears to be the last edition that Williamson printed and sold himself.
Published by Thoemmes Press in 1996. Facsimile reprint with a new intorduction by Michael Fry. First edition thus. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. It measures approx. 8 3/4" x 5 5/8" with xiii and vi with 147 pages plus a facsimile of the original frontispice.
The case of the book is in very good condition with slight fading to the spine.
The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
