WILLIAMSON COUNTY HISTORY
COUPLAND, TEXAS
A City on a Hill
A Story of a community, a Church, a People
This is a brief history of a small town near Austin that was settled by German and Swiss immigrants in the late 19th century. While it focuses on these settlers, it tells a much longer story beginning with the prehistoric native peoples who lived along Brushy Creek for 10, 000 years or more, and carries it forward to modern days. Many of the early Germanic people and families who chose to live in this very rural farming community are named and their deeds are discussed. There is a great deal of information about the establishment and development of St. Peters Church, the social and spiritual center of life in this outpost of German culture in Texas. Also covered are the earliest Spanish, Mexican and American colonists who came here, the effect of the Civil War, and how the coming of the railroad in 1887 changed everything and created the actual town of Coupland.
