Letters From Lee ' S Army, Susan Blackford, HB, Good, DJ, 1947, C. Scribner ' S
Item History & Price
The inside dust jacket states:
When the letters that passed between Susan Leigh Black...ford and her husband during the War Between the States were privately printed 1894 in a very small edition, one of the few copies was sent to Thomas Nelson Page. He was enthusiastic about the book and insisted that Mrs. Blackford must have it published for general consumption - but the bitterness of many parts, especially the accounts of the actions of Federal soldiers given in the latter sections, and the fact that some of the letters "stepped on the toes of too many then still living, " stood in the way of its publication. Now Charles Blackford III has abridged and edited "Letters from Lee's Army" from his grandfather's and grandmother's correspondence in a fashion that gives the book absorbing interest for the general reader. The present editor, grandson of Charles Minor Blackford, is a veteran of the second World War, in which he served at Kiska, Tarawa, and Saipan as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Navy. "We now look upon the Civil War as a romantic war, " writes Mr. Blackford in his Preface. "The sting of suffering and loss in its wake has passed. My grandmother remained bitter until almost the end of her life..." This uncensored book tells why.
