Rudy Zwieg was born in 1917 in Douglas County, MN and lived there his entire life. He has been carving since the 30’s, carving plugs for his own use during the depression. A lot of his early decoys were the basic red and white fish, During the 50’s he sold them at local stores for $8/dozen. Later in life he started carving various fancy fish and critteThi s for sale. One of these decoys, a frog-shaped carved wooden decoy, is proudly displayed at the N...ational Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution. Rudy’s decoys are easily identified by the star pattern around the eye, which looks like the points of a compass. I purchased this decoy from Rudy myself in the basement of his home in Alexandria, MN several years ago.
This sunfish is beautifully painted, has Rudy's trademark eyes and even has real fish fins. There is a hole drilled in the top fin for hanging to it can be used as a tabletop piece. It sits level.
The mouth is carved, not just painted on. This fish is not weighted, it was not meant to be a working fish decoy, but a piece of art to enjoy. It is signed on the bottom though. Check out the photos for these details.
