RARE EARLY SECONDS SHELLEY ART DECO QUEEN ANNE VERSAILLES PATTERN TRIO 2058
Item History & Price
This is an early rare pattern that doesn'tshow up all that often. Marked with a Registered number to the base- 723404 which is for Queen Anneshape. The fantastic pattern of colourful birds withcurly tails and fruit is officially called VERSAILLES but these pieces are not marked with the name. Pattern number is S 2058 which means theyare early seconds. According to the Shelley Club website in anarticle title...d Too Good To Pass Up: “Seconds ware came aboutbecause a fault was found at the white ware stage of manufacture. Whiteware was produced when the pottery had been fired once (biscuit ware), dippedin glaze and refired. It was at this point that the fault was foundduring inspection and the ware was stored until the decision to use it wastaken.” Chris and Ray Reynolds, former Decorating Manager for ShelleyPotteries, described the types of faults which led to ware being designated asSeconds thusly: “A piece could be slightly misshapen, i.e., a twist in asaucer or plate, or a cup not fully round, or the handle slightly to one side. There could be a glaze blob on the piece, (where the glaze had not runproperly), a glaze nip, usually on a foot of a cup where a small piece of glazehas stuck, or pinholes in the glaze.” These faults are often covered bythe litho on the finished piece so that a collector may not be able to discoverthe fault. Anything with a crack or chip would have been thrownout. These Seconds ware pieces were sold by Shelley at a deepdiscount. Shelley took great pride in the quality of their wares andwould never have sold ware with hidden faults at full price." Patternnumbers for seconds range in number from 2000 to 2571 and in date from June 1919 to June1966. Theearly ones are quite rare and as this one is only58patterns into the range I would definitely classifythisone as early. CONDITION
Visually all three pieces look to be in excellentvintage condition. I have tried to identify the flaws which caused this stunning trio to be ratedas a second. The most obvious is the saucer which has a flake out of one edge which hasthen been glazed over - see close-up photo. It's not huge and isn't obvious either. The saucer doesn't ring for the normallength of time when tapped either. It's a short low ping, it's hard to explainbut it doesn't sound dead like apiece willwhen it is cracked or heavy crazed. The side plate I had a lot more trouble with.It rings beautifully when tapped. The only thing I could see is a small, dark blob on the back which if you look at the photo of the underside of the three piecesyou can see on the right but maybe I've missed something else, I've looked longand hard though. The cup is also a mystery. It also pings beautifullywhen tapped. No internal discolouration from use either. There are no under glazechips likethe saucer or anything similar that I could see but it seems to lean a bit to the left as you look at it fronton. Perhaps this is it's crime. But otherwise as I said the set looks greatwhen displayed. DIMENSIONS
The cup measures approx 6 cm high (just under 21/4").The saucer is 13.4 cm across(5 1/4") and the side plate is 14 cm across(5 7/16") >>>>>><<<<<< We guarantee our descriptions are accurateand our prices competitive.
