RARE BOOK: " An Anthology Of German Literature " By Prof. Calvin Thomas (1909)
Item History & Price
This is one of my mother's German literature course books from when she taught the language. She hasn't opened it since the 1970's and it's been sitting on her living room book shelf for the past 50 years. It is in very good condition other than very simple notations made by her on about 50 pages (see pictures for an example). The cover and binding are fully intact and look great other than the expecte...d ageing for being 111 years old.
Written and compiled by Calvin Thomas, the renowned American scholar and professor of Germanic languages and literature at Columbia University who is much credited with introducing the study of German into U.S. public schools, the book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the history of German literature. Originally published in 1906, it is written in two parts:
Part 1: From the earliest times to the 16th Century (in modern German translations)Part 2: From the Reformation to the Classics of the 18th Century (according to the best critical editions)Each section contains classic selections of German literature with brief English commentary by Professor Thomas of Columbia University before leading into the German selection in modern German translations. Professor Thomas has written a wonderful preface to the book describing its purpose and how he presents the material. The book has 399 pages and represents many distinguished writers in German history.
