There are 37 pictures in this listing. Please see below to view them all. This is a very rare 1st edition of the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. The book was published in 1900 by A. Wessels Company of New York. To my knowledge, the first edition of this book published by A. Wessels Company is very rare and not found very often. The book is 7 ½” by 10”. It was printed by Braunworth & Co. Bookbinders and Printers in Brook...lyn, N.Y. The title page states that the book includes 16 Full-page Illustrations by Blanche McManus. However, there appear to be 17 illustrations. I have no explanation for that disparity. I know absolutely nothing about books nor how to grade them. However, even as a neophyte on the subject, I can see that the book is in poor condition. The fabric on the cover has a missing portion about the size of a nickel just to the left of Alice’s head (shown in one of the pictures). The binding is substantially detached from the pages, although is still attached along the back edge. The corners of the front and back covers are worn. A few of the pages have small tears. There is handwriting by the little girl, Sally Pierson May 1932 who owned the book on the inside of the front and back covers, as pictured. Two of the illustrations have come loose from the book. The two loose illustrations are shown as the last two photos below. I do not know where in the book they belong. I’m assuming that if this book is of interest to a collector, it will be because of its rarity and not its condition. I am starting the book at a low price and will let you book collectors determine its value. Please be sure to ask any questions prior to bidding as I am not at all familiar with books.
