We are offering this beautiful French Pendule de Paris porcelain mantel clock. This piece is very old circa 1900. It is a rare clock for two reasons mainly. First, the case is a beautiful hand painted affair adorned with white roses. I hope the pictures do it justice. I have seen hand painted porcelain cases in the past but "never" one where the adornments are mounted on the case and emanating from the surface of the piece. This I have never seen before and I have looked at a lot of Fr...ench clocks. Secondly, the back of the porcelain dial is signed by the artist who did the hand painting. This is not to be confused with the horologists who serviced the movement. Those initials and dates are etched into the back of the brass bezel. I have disassembled many mantel clocks and never found one that was signed by the artist. I don't have any information on the French painter but he/she has done a marvelous job on this mantel clock case. Unfortunately the roses which are either intentionally unglazed or lost their glazing are somewhat dirty and need to be cleaned. I chose not to do that myself as it is not my specialty. The case is very sturdy however there appears to be a repair to the front right footing. The glass is solid and thick, absent any cracks or chips. (glass on the rear door has a crack but structurally sound) The dial is beautifully painted porcelain with the same flower motif as the case. You can feel the raised painted surfaces on the dial. The round French movement ticks away effortlessly with the slightest push of the pendulum. When adjusted using the pendulum, keeps excellent time as all good quality French movements do. The movement itself is unsigned and has the serial number 1216. You will note that the serial number on the brass movement and handwritten on the back of the dial are the same - 1216. You know they are matching. Also of note is the porcelain makers mark on the bottom of the case, . This denotes the makers mark of the case. I cannot make out who the makers were. A clock like this comes along very infrequently every hundred years or so. Don't miss your opportunity to own a functioning piece of horological history. I would be please to answer any questions about this piece and offer any assistance needed in setting it up in it's new home.
