A moulded cream terracotta plaque depicting the demon god, Humbaba. He has a grimacing smile, nose bent to the side and with bulbous eyes. With side piercings for suspension (probably in the dwelling house). Reverse unmodelled.
Height 10 cms (3.9 ins).
Condition: Fair-Fine. Damage affecting one side of the face affecting one of the suspension holes.
Old Babylonian period: Circa 1900–1700 BC.
Humbaba belongs in the tale of Gilgamesh in the Cedar Forest, where Gilgamesh and Enkindu kill the demi god, Humbaba. "Humbaba, his voice is the Deluge, his speech is Fire, and his breath is Death!" See MS 3025 in the Schoyen collection.
This object belongs to a series of terra-cotta figurines and tablets featuring the same type of figure and dating mostly from the early 2nd millennium BC. Similar representations have been found at Mesopotamian and Iranian sites. This particular portrayal of Humbaba is a product of a delightful form of popular art, as opposed to luxurious pieces made for a much more demanding clientele.
