A moulded terracotta plaque depicting a forward-facing figure, possibly Astarte. Reverse unmodelled.
Height 10.1 cms (4 ins).
Condition: Fine, with light encrustations.  A small surface chip to top left corner.
Old Babylonian period: Circa 1900–1700 BC.

A similar plaque is in the Ashmoleon Museum, Oxford which is described as an Old Babylonian plaque of the goddess Ishtah, also known as Astarte. The latter is the Hellenized name associated with the chief goddess or female divinity of the Near Eastern peoples, also known as Ishtar (Akkadian), Astarte (Phoenician), or Inanna (Sumerian). She was the most important female deity in the Near East through the second millennium BC. She was identified with sunrise and the planet Venus and was the goddess of both sexual love and warfare. The Greeks identified her with Aphrodite.
