“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” Marcus Aurelius

A fantastic German language edition of the Meditations, a compilation of the... philosophy of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, with a life and notes by Johann Adolf Hofmann. Marcus Aurelius (Latin: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus 26 April 121 – 17 March 180 AD) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180, ruling jointly with his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus, until Verus' death in 169 and jointly with his son, Commodus, from 177 till Aurelius' own death. He was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors.  He was a practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known as Meditations,   is a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. It is considered by many commentators to be one of the greatest works of philosophy ever.
Original three quarters leather with raised bands to the spine, in nice shape, all intact, lightly worn with a  few small tears and bumping at the spine extremities and corners. Red speckled page edges. A good copy with light wear, soiling and a few small prevailing stains, complete including the illustrated portrait frontis. Text in German. Old inscription on the front  by Rev Peter Herbruck, a well known pastor from Canton, Ohio in the mid 1800s (see below), else unmarked. Measures 7.25" x 4.75". Good luck!
Peter Herbruck began preaching in Canton at age 19. When his son, Emil, died in 1940, it marked the end of a 108-year span that Herbrucks had served as pastor or pastor emeritus of Protestant congregations in Canton.EDITOR’S NOTE: This is Part 1 of the fourth installment in a yearlong series on the people, families and topics that have shaped the heritage of Stark County. Today we examine Peter Herbruck. Along with his son, Emil, the Herbrucks were pastors (or pastor emeritus) in Canton congregations for 108 years. This is the story of how they matriculated to Stark County and contributed to its growth.“Herbruck” is more than a little street in northeast Canton bearing that name. And it’s more than a park farther north in the city, much of which is now home for the First Tee of Canton youth golf program. The original Herbruck was the most prolific Protestant pastor that Stark County had ever known. His name was Peter Herbruck. He preached at as many as 26 churches in Stark and surrounding counties. In 1862, he led the construction of a church building that stands in Canton to this day. And in his 53 years in the pulpit at that same church, he married 2, 611 couples, presided over 2, 560 funerals, baptized 5, 938 people and confirmed 2, 917 more. Not too shabby for a life’s work.Born in Zweibrücken, Germany, Herbruck first landed in Philadelphia.“The story was it took something like 70 days on a ship, ” said 77-year-old Caroline Soldatis, of Boardman, a great-great-granddaughter of Peter Herbruck. “And I know once he got here ... there was a lot of walking. He couldn’t afford a horse, so he had to walk.” Historical records, local history books, newspapers, family genealogy work and accounts written by Peter Herbruck himself, and by one of his sons, Emil, as well as a book about the church help to provide a fairly lucid picture of his impact on the area.
“He was pretty unpolitically correct, ” said the Rev. Bruce Mont, of First Church of the Resurrection, at 901 Tuscarawas St. E., a successor church to the German Reformed Church where Herbruck ministered from that same location. “There’s a story that when Herbruck was away on some business ... a member offered to buy a keg of beer for the (congregation) if they would get rid of Herbruck. When Herbruck got back ... he threw the guy out the front door of the church.”***Even as a child, Peter Herbruck longed to preach the gospel. He attended a select school in Germany, studying theology, walking five miles each way. At the age of 18, in 1831, he walked several hundred miles to the post in Le Havre, France, where he would journey by boat to the United States. Battling storms and even having to switch boats at one point, he finally arrived in Philadelphia.Herbruck then began walking west.He made it to Berks County, in Pennsylvania, where he worked a brief time as a teacher. Then, Herbruck joined up with a group that was headed to Ohio by wagon. They made it to Wheeling, W.Va., when Herbruck decided to head toward the small town of Canton. He passed through, on his way to Massillon. But Herbruck made it only as far as the Reedurban area, stopping at Wirt’s Tavern and Hotel. It was there Herbruck met the Rev. Benjamin Faust, pastor of the Reformed Church in Canton.“Young man, do not bury your talent in a napkin, ” Faust told him. “Come to me and prepare yourself for the ministry.”Under Faust’s tutelage, the teen studied for the ministry. And when Faust fell ill in 1832, the then-19-year-old Herbruck was called on to replace him in the Reformed Church — beginning a service that would last more than half a century.
