Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Wilson - 1823. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section contains the following verse
Like leaves on trees the race of man is foundNow green in youth, now withering on the groundAnother race the following Spring suppliesThey fall successive and successive rise
So ...generations in their course decaySo flourish these when those are passed away
The verse is contained within a floral edged framework which has a star motif, crown and heat motif on each side. There is a central shield beneath the verse with a crown above and held aloft by what appears to be two mice. There is an octagonal plaque to the left and right of the shield, the left plaque containing Mary's name and the right one the date of June 3 1823, each with a floral urn and bird to their side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with another floral edged framework which contains the following verse
Since no man can success commandWith all his art and careWhatever work I take in handI will begin with prayerAnd should kind Heaven lend successAnd prosper all my waysLike Abraham's servant I'll expressMy gratitude in praiseWorksop, Notts
The verse is underlined with a floral border which has Mary's place of residence - Worksop. Notts - beneath flanked by a small dog and flower. There is a flower basket on each side of the verse then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker down the middle with some minor vertical rippling. There is also an area of damage below the words on the ground in the first verse and a few much smaller areas elsewhere. The sampler appears to have been conserved at some time and is placed on a similar coloured backing cloth which makes the damage less noticeable. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a later, mid 19th oak frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the odd scratch and scuff mark commensurate with their age.Measures 11 1/4" x 16" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 20" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
