I used to collect photos and military documents, and I donated a huge amount to museums - the ones left over are duplicates or lessor-quality items than my donations. Passing on history:
The US Navy's second true Aircraft Carrier, the giant USS Lexington was considered the ultimate weapon when it was designed. It featured heavy cruiser 8" guns (visible in the photo) forward of the tower, which helps to date the photo to just before the war started. Lexington was su...nk at the Battle of the Coral Sea, fighting the Japanese intent on invading Port Moresby. Her loss blunted the Japanese advance, and they never again successfully invaded an allied nation after that battle.
The USS Lexington is a historic ship and original, unpublished photos are rare - they are not making any more. Rare image of vessels during wartime (taking such photos was not allowed). Full caption on the back, nice photo.
