Original WW2 era American "Quartermaster Knife" (model 225Q) manufactured by Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Model 225Q fighting/utility knife ("Q" stands for Quartermaster) was designed as a heavy-duty tool to open ammo boxes, cargo crates, and hammer down nails/enemy sculls, if needed. Very tough and practical, Quartermaster knives were used as intended during the war, so relatively few survive in decent condition. This specimen is in better than average condition for the type: the blade is... intact; stacked handle is in excellent shape; ricasso is stamped CATTARAUGUS / 225Q. Stacked leather washers & fiber spacers handle with heavy steel handguard and hammer-like pommel; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is 10-1/2" / 26.7 cm overall; the blade is about 6" /15.2 cm long; 4.5 mm thick. Model 225Q fighting/utility knife ("Q" stands for Quartermaster) was designed as a heavy-duty knife for opening ammo boxes, cargo crates, and hammer down nails (or enemy sculls) if needed. These Quartermasters were very popular with the troops and saw action in every major military theater during the War. This particular type is illustrated on page 88-89 in the book KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II by Michael W Silvey - a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book's scan attached). Quartermaster is a solid heavy-duty tool that was designed to take a lot of abuse - tough and practical, Quartermasters were used as intended in the battlefields, so relatively few survive in decent condition. This specimen is in better than average condition for the type: the blade is undamaged; the tip is intact; stacked handle is in excellent shape. Ricasso is stamped CATTARAUGUS / 225Q. Stacked leather washers and fiber spacers handle with heavy steel handguard and hammer-like pommel. Excellent overall condition - all parts are solid with no play. The knife is about 10-1/2" / 26.7 cm overall; the blade is about 6" /15.2 cm long; 4.5 mm thick. There is no sheath. This knife has not been clean or tampered with in any way, 100% original "as-purchased" condition.
