Originally part of acomplete miniature child's tea set, the platemeasures 5-1/2 inchesin diameter, decorated with a lush water lily lotus orpond nymph pattern. The plateis transfer printed in a brilliant deep mulberry flow blue. Itis markedwith pattern name ‘NYMPH wit...h the initials H&W. Shown in DorisLechler's EnglishToy China andLorraine Punchard'sPlaytime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK and US, theset was made by Hancock Whittingham & Co, a pottery manufactoryin the Staffordshire region of England c1860. The plateis in very good condition with an age line visible on the back side only, and no other chips, cracks or repairs. Not fine pottery and not meant to be...made for childs play and probably considered disposable. Minorglaze crazing consistent with prior use and age. Minor stilt marks, glaze pooling and insignificant transferimperfections, original to the making and typical of these earlywares. A doll size work of art, children's transferware of thisquality is quite scarce and highly sought after.
