This very attractive Masonic medal is a souvenir from the 1884 laying of the corner stone of the Iowa Grand Lodge Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa - the first Masonic library facility in the entire world. One side has a large image of the library building (which was demolished in 1952), with the words LIBRARY BUILDING CORNER STONE MAY 7, 1884 immediately beneath the image and the Latin words QUID UTILIUS above it. The words GRAND LODGE OF IOWA A. F. & A. M. CON...STITUTED JANUARY 8, 1844 are along the rim. The other side has two conjoined male busts, with the words LABOR OMNIA SUPERAT G. B. VAN SAUN, GR. MASTER, T. S. PARVIN, GR. SEC. along the rim. This medal was struck very well, with detailed, very high-relief (three-dimensional) images and bold lettering.
