This rare antique vintage cast iron (CI) mechanical penny bank was called Indian Shooting Bear. Originally manufactured by J. & E. Stevens Co., Cromwell, Ct., Circa 1883. No patent papers have been found. The design is attributed to Charles Bailey. In the 1907 L. H. Macy Catalog it was advertised as "Bear Hunt". This is also the name Stevens used. The price was $8.50 per dozen. Pull the trigger of the gun back into a locked position. The head of the Indian drops forward... as though taking aim. Place a coin on the gun and press the lever which causes the coin to be shot into the bear's chest. A cap can be used with the bank. On the bottom it says "PATS JAN 17, 1888" and on the circular it says PATD "FEB 2, 1815". The bank is in excellent condition, no very minor rust, no cracks, holes or repairs. The head and feathers are intact. Measures approximately 10-1/2" x 3" x 7-3/8". Have tried to take pictures for you to see all the details. Questions? Please email prior to bidding. I accept Paypal.
