Offered is the antique leather-bound "Plutarch's Lives, Volume the Seventh", printed in 1727 for J. Tonson in London. This is Vol. 7 of a total of 8. Eight "lives" are included: Agis, Cleomenes, Tiberius Gracchus, Caius Gracchus, Demetrius Poliorcetes, Marcus Antonius, Demosthenes and M. Tullius Cicero. In addition to the words of Plutarch, there are "notes historical and critical" by M. Dacier. There are at least seven full-page illustrations, including the frontispiece, plus numerous... graphics of small boxes, fancy page headers, lines, etc. This is a rare find; at the time of original listing I could not find any volumes of this edition for sale on eBay and only a few for sale anywhere else, with no separate Vol. 7's available.
The book measures approx. 7 7/8" x 5 1/4" and contains 459 pages. Overall, the book is in good condition, with some damage. The leather cover has the expected wear for a nearly 300-year-old book; mainly to the corners and edges, with numerous marks and light scuffs elsewhere. The front cover is splitting from the spine; at present it is about 2/3 detached, from the top down. The back cover is split for only about 1" down from the top. There is a small amount of leather missing from the top and bottom of the spine. There are a few stains on the cover, as well. The gold words on the spine are still partially shiny. Due to the front cover situation there is of course cracking inside the front cover but not in the back. The white endpapers are quite yellowed and soiled, with some staining. I see no missing pages. I see no torn or missing pages, but there are some with folded corners. All of the pages are well-attached to the binding. The pages have, of course, yellowed, but most of the pages are generally clear, with light foxing. Some pages have heavier foxing and a few stains, etc, but all text is readable. The pages are also somewhat wavy and a few are wrinkled. I see no writing in the book.
