This great late Federal inlaid mahogany box was made in America c. 1845. It has a pagoda shaped top inlaid with a compass rose set in a parquetry field composed of grey-green died mahogany and red mahogany. This central field is surrounded by a border of herringbone inlay also in holly and black wood. The box's front, back and sides are veneered in book matched crotch grain mahogany with a lower edge crossbanded in what might be satinwood or satin birch and strung in ...black wood. The box is fitted with a period carrying handle and a Federal style escutcheon. The box has its original functioning lock and key. The interior of the box is lined in handmade marble paper. I believe this box was originally designed to be a jewelry box. It is 1$" wide x 9" deep x 6" tall. The box has a few minor fills in the mahogany veneer. The only notable on is in the top left front corner. It blends well and I don't think it is distracting. The box is in good overall condition with a mellow old finish, no loose veneer and no structural problems. Washington State buyers please add 10.1% State Sales Tax. Stock number SAX-163
