Visit Our ShopAdd To Saved SellersJoin Our NewsletterContact UsRare Early Medieval Silver Norse Viking Decorated Finger Ring – ‘Helm of Awe’DescriptionDate: Circa 10th – 11thCentury:Size: UK Ring Size: R ½: weight 6.59grams:The Old Norse ‘Helm of Awe’ [Old Norse Ægishjálmr, pronounced “EYE-gis-hiowlm-er”], is one of the mostmysterious and powerful symbols in Norse mythology: Its meaning is suggested tobe one of both protection and power over ones enemies through she...ar might inbattle: There is however, another darker aspect to the “signal”, which suggestsa favour to the Norse deity Loki, a mischievous and dangerousdemigod: He is considered by many to be the true original dark magician and playerof the most dangerous games - the taker of souls:The ring is a whole cast ofsolid silver and formed in the round: The band is convex to the lower shankwith a flattened inner face: The band rises to the shoulders and widens to thebezel intersection: The bezel is formed as a silver plate and, to theunder-side it is chamfered at 45 degrees to form a smooth finger-plate:The bezel decoration is builtaround incised hand inscribed decoration: A central cross emits four terminallinear transects, which terminate in four linear hexafoils.
