Small mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Martha Moulder - 1859. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central pedestal surrounded by a trio of birds and floral motifs then flanked by a tree, flower baskets and a heralding cherub. Martha's name and the date of 1859 are stitched above the trio of birds with a butterfly to the left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched wi...th a very sweet narrow house with long windows on the ground floor with small windows above. A dog stands on either side of the house with a floral motif and flower basket above them. There is a tall tree to the side of each dog with a bird perched on top and a crown to the top and bottom. The whole piece is then surrounded by a neat floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with grubbiness down each side, particularly the right, and some staining around the edges. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Martha first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are areas of damage to both the edges and field of the linen. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 11 3/4" x 8 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
