MID 19TH CENTURY HOUSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH LOUISA WALPOLE DYKE? - 1864

Mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Louisa Walpole Dyke? - 1864. I've put a question mark after Elizabeth Louisa's name as it is uncertain whether Dyke is part of her surname or where she lived as Dyke is a village in Lincolnshire. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. Elizabeth Louisa has stitched a black background to her sampler which accentuates the motif work very well. The upper section of the gauze is st...itched at the centre with a very sweet two storey house which has a bird perched on the roof flanked by two larger birds and a flower. The ground floor of the house has two stags and a bird on either side with two flowers above the right side bird. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central rosebush with a bird standing on each side and five birds around its blooms. There is a fruit basket to the left and right of the rosebush with a bird to the outer side and a floral motif above, also with a bird nearby. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central bird standing on a hillock with a flower, lion and tree to his left and right plus two flowers and a bird above the lions. Elizabeth's name and the date of 1864 are then stitched across the bottom edge.The small amount of gauze visible has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good with the purple having mellowed more than other shades as is often the case. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth Louisa first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is is a split approximately two inches long running across the top left edge of the gauze. The photographs also show small visible tack marks and old glue residue around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked and glued down at some point of time.
