The works of Édouard Fraisse are mainly inspired by sport and scholastic competitions. The obverse on this medal is one of his finest creations with a flawless rendering of a helmeted Marianne, the metaphorical symbol for France. The reve...rse is borrowed from a classic wreath design by Henry Dubois. He was a member of the Society of French Artists and exhibited at the Salon des artistes Français, where he received a gold medal in 1937. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1929.
Edge: Paris Mint Cornucopia mint mark and stamped 'Bronze'.
This is an original art medal ca. 1930, not a reproduction or later restrike.
This beautiful Art Deco bronze medal measures 50MM and is certified and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. The holder measures 7 1/2" X 5 3/4".
During the 1990's and early 2000's I assembled a carefully selected, high end collection of hundreds of mostly French medals and jetons. My primary goal was to collect and preserve choice examples of the medallic art of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. The Leonard Collection, was the first large scale collection of French and other European Medals submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation for certification. In the process, over 400 pieces were certified. I am now beginning a process of selling some and eventually all of these pieces.
This medal will be shipped as a USPS First Class Package.
