3. You get a check! 2 Antique 1800s Wooden Tennis Rackets William Read HJ Gray + Sons Cambridge MA This listing is for two Antique Wooden Tennis Rackets. They both have concave wedges whcich were typically used in the late 1800s. One is marked 'William Read and Sons Boston Mass'. The other racket is marked 'H.... J. Gray and Sons' on one side of the handle and 'Cambridge' on the other side. It also has the letters 'G.L.B.C.' scratched into the wedge on one side. They are both in good condition with no cracks or other damage other than some broken springs. Please see the detailed photos below and contact us with any questions before bidding. We have a low opening bid price so don't miss your chance to win!In 1826 William Read and Edward Lane opened a store in Dock Square, Boston Mass. After the death of Mr. Lane, in 1849, William Read took over the business, and in 1854 the firm name was changed to William Read and Sons. Also known as Wm Read & Sons, the store specialized in military arms and sporting goods. During the Civil War, Read and Sons supplied the Union Troops with most of their guns and ammunition. In 1908 they became part of the Winchester store.In 1855 The company of H. J. Gray and Sons was founded in Cambridge by world rackets champion Henry John Gray who started manufacturing wooden racquets for Cambridge students, among them Ranjitsinjhi, King Edward VII, and King George VI.Please see our other listings for more vintage tennis rackets.
