ANTIQUE c. 1870 WAX over Papier Mache Glass Eyes LOVELY 23" ALL ORIGINAL DOLL
THIS DOLL WAS AN ACCESSION FROM THE STRONG MUSEUM (along with many others). SHE HAS THE ACCESSION NUMBER ON THE BACK OF HER SHOULDER PLATE...(see photo).
A very lovely, circa 1870, wax over papier-mache doll with large dark eyes and looks a little bewildered. Her shoulder/head is wax over papier-mache, her arms are (I think) papier-mache or composition (not waxed). ... Her legs are composition (or papier-mache) and not waxed. Her torso and upper legs are, excelsior or sawdust stuffed, cloth. She wears cotton bloomers with lace trim and a cotton top with lace trim. Both pieces are old but do not seem as old as the doll (they are in pretty good condition! I think they were her underwear). This lovely doll measures approximately 23" tall and is in fair to good condition. Her face looks good but there is wear (small divots and lines)...her glass eyes probably had eyelashes and her eyebrows are there but worn. Her gray wig looks original and has wear. She has a dark line on the side of her neck that looks like it might have been filled with wax (about 1" long and maybe 1/32" wide?). There is a very tight crack, in the wax, that runs from this dark line and up to her hair in the back ( not at all noticeable but the dark line is noticeable). The shoulder plate has a lot of wear and the front edge has some loss. She has black boots and the right one may have been repaired because it does not look as smooth as the other (see photo). The material on her torso is original and you can see the shape of the squeaker in front (the squeaker is not working). Her arms and hands are papier-mache (or composition) and the tip of one finger (on her left hand) is chipped off (hard to notice). She has a repair on both upper legs (a patch) and farther up the legs is a hole in each one (that was loosing sawdust, so I scotch taped them). This lovely antique wax doll still displays great and will certainly compliment any collection. Stand not included. Being offered as is and with no reserve. Any overpayment in shipping will be gladly returned.
