Up for sale is a gorgeous 5 digit low serial 1890 $1 Treasury Note with the coveted Ornate Back design. This was a scarce one year issue before they changed the reverse design to a much simpler one, and they printed like 10x more 1891 notes than these 1890 with the ornate design. Low serial notes are tough to come by in these series, as they only printed one serial block and these were workhorses of the American economy during the industrial revolution and tail end of the pioneer/settl...er era.
This is an Fr 347 with Rosecrans-Huston signatures and the iconic large, spiked brown seal. Very beautiful design and popular pairing of the big spiked seal and the ornate back. The note grades about a Fine in my opinion, somewhere around a 10-12. Still solid paper with great color on the design and no distracting marks. Some minor edge roughness with nicks and paper pull typical of this grade and notes of this era. Has two micro pinholes only visible with bright back light. Still a very eye appealing note especially with the low serial and star, one of the first Stanton notes to be printed. Please check scans and grade for yourself. Friedberg has a Fine at $500, and even CDN wholesale goes for $390 not including the charm of the low serial. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
