Up for sale is the scarce series key Fr 348 1890 Treasury Note with Rosecrans-Nebeker signatures and large spiked brown seal. The 1890 series itself is far more scarce in number than the 1891 and the ornate back makes it very popular with collectors. Of the three varieties printed in 1890, the Fr 348 is by far the rarest with only 41 known examples in the PMG population report. This is a transition note, hence the very brief printing. Immediately after Nebeker took office, they switche...d to the small red seal on currency. Very few plates were made with Nebeker's signature but having the large brown seal like the previous Huston notes. This Nebeker signature with large spiked seal combination commands quite a premium for their rarity across many series and denominations. Grab this one while you can, it is the only Fr 348 I have ever had.
The note grades VG/Fine in my opinion. Still has decent paper quality and the corners and edges are still sharp, more fitting with a Fine note. It does have a small edge tear on the bottom and some light marks from a paper clip on the reverse, but neither are very noticeable. My best guess is it would grade a VG-10 right in between that VG/Fine range. But please check scans and judge for yourself. CPG (the retail price sheets from the publisher of Green sheet) has this rare variety at $390 in VG-8 and $520 in Fine-12, and both Friedberg and Bank Note Reporter have this up at $550 in Fine and this note is pretty close.
