Page removed from damaged book: "Viae Vitae Aeternae" by A. Sucquet, a famous Jesuit priest of the Counter-Reformation.
The image size is approx. 3.75 x 5.25 inch. This is a copperplate etching/engraving on handmade paper.
Written in Latin, title translates to: "The Way of Eternal Life, " by Antonius Sucquet (or: The Road / Path to Eternal Life)
Authentic - approx. 400 years old! - Haunting engraving by 17th century Baroque Flemish /Friesland artist Boetius Bolswert.

Because Via Vitae was published in Latin, I needed to find a translation of this book to be able to understand the symbolism.
Rev. Isaac Williams (prominent in the Oxford Movement) published his amazing poetic translation of "Viae Vitae Aeternae" in 1842.
The text below comes from my personal copy of an 1842 First Edition of the translation, "The Baptistery, or the Way of Eternal Life, " by Isaac Williams.
I am providing Isaac Williams' translation so you may gain a better appreciation for Bolswert's authentic 17th Century illustration being offered. Enjoy!
Translation by Isaac Williams: Plate 12 -- text below explains the symbolism
"Vulnerable as Infants, We must Trust in the Lord....
If thou wouldest attain unto that grace which thou desires,
put thy trust in God only, and distrust thyself. Although thou mayest have determined to seek after Virtue,
as observed in the contemplation of that mystery which we have considered, and to follow Christ [A] :
yet, alas, the World [B] and the weight of corrupt nature will hold thee : and perhaps in addition to these thou wilt be pulled backward by the chains of Sin [C].
But put thy trust in God, and Christ shall liberate thee [D] by His grace ; and will point out unto thee the way to Virtue [E] . Without the aid of His grace man is like an Infant [F],
who is unable either to rise, or to stand, or to defend, and feed himself, or even to seek those things which he needeth from another.
Have no confidence therefore in thyself, but put thy trust in God only, and His grace ; as the holy David did [G], when he overcame Goliath the Philistine, not with a sling and a stone, but in the Name of the Lord.
And take care in thus adventuring with the sure aid of God,
that thou art by no means of a doubtful mind, lest with St. Peter [H] thou beginnest to sink on account of the weakness of thy Faith."

Circa 400 year old 1st Edition 1620 print, Plate 10 illustration (leaf), plus caption / explanation page, plus several pages of text.
This engraved illustration was removed from a damaged copy of this very important “emblem book, ” which is said to unite
the spiritual meditations and practices of the Belgian Jesuit Antoine Sucquet with fine emblematic illustrations devised
by the great baroque engraver Boetius a Bolswert (c. 1580-1633),
called by Praz 'the illustrator of the sentimental and ecstatic states of the soul'.
Illustrations for this "illustrated parables" project are Boetius A. Bolswert's haunting views of Hell and glimpses of Heaven.
Man's worse drives are iconized through symbols and satyrs, ghouls, harpies, werewolves, and semi-human lizards,
while man's progress towards eternal life is shown by symbols as ever hindered by the multifarious and rapacious beast within."
Via Vitae was first published over 50 years before the first edition of John Bunyan's allegorical Pilgrim's Progress.
This 1st Edition 1620 book page above comes from a contemplative Jesuit Catholic work published in Latin during the Counter-Reformation.
Eventually, Christian Protestants also grew to appreciate this work. Due to the popularity of this book, it was reissued in later editions.
The actual page you are considering to purchase is 397 years old -- I removed it myself from my damaged 1620 edition.
