Victorian Micro Mosaic Petra Dura Spaniel Hound Dogs & Puppies Brooch
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:386808 | Country/Region of Manufacture: Italy |
For your consideration is this beautiful micro mosaic brooch depicting two hound dogs and their two nursing puppies! It's rare to find one with TWO hounds, let alone with puppies! The mosaic measures roughly 26 mm x 23 mm. Working C clasp and tube hinge date it to the Victorian Era. I suspect the setting is gold or rolled gold and the back panel appears to be silver. There is minimal tesserae loss I can detect (the tiny glas...s tiles). Please zoom and examine all photos closely for additional details and condition. The goldstone has no cracks. The brooch looks to be a conversion from a clasp and likely done in the 1800s. Overall a gorgeous little brooch.

Occasionally I have people ask me if this is my best price for a given item. I appreciate your question. I prefer to list at my lowest possible price so my buyers are getting the best value. I prefer not to artificially inflate prices only to dicker down. I don't feel that serves anyone. Yes, this is my best price.
A brief history of micro mosaic jewelry:Wearing micro mosaic jewelry became popular during the Grand Tour period (17th - 19th Century). Members of rich European families would travel around Europe, taking in the sights and cultures of different countries. Italy was a very popular tourist spot as it had a long and prestigious history in arts and culture - a favorite subject in aristocratic circles. It was also a famous glass producer, and Italian craftsmen quickly turned their glass making skills to making stunning miniature micro mosaic pictures for their rich visitors. Flowers were a very popular subject.
