Autograph letter signed by, “Rob’t Morris, ” to h...is close friend and business partner, John Nicholson, regarding the purchase of flour for the North American Land Company: “Dear Sir, I wish you would send me an acct. (exact) of the flour shipped by your order with the cost of charges that I may include the contract for four in the settlement of amounts. Yours sincerely, Rob’t Morris, Octr. 9th, 1794, Jno. Nicholson Esq.” The letter is one page, measures 7.25 by 4.75 inches, and in fine condition with minor toning, minor soiling, and evidence of mounting along the borders.
BOTH MORRIS AND NICHOLSON ENDED UP IN DEBTORS’ PRISON BECAUSE THE COMPANY’S PROJECTED REVENUE DID NOT COME IN QUICKLY ENOUGH TO MEET LOAN AND TAX DEADLINES
Once one of the best known merchants in the Colonies whose reputation was enough to secure the necessary funding for the American Revolution, Morris ran into some tough times in the newly-formed United States of America. Following the war, a grateful government gave Morris large tracts of land, which he transformed into the North American Land Company, from which this letter is related to. Because projected revenue did not come in quickly enough to meet loan and tax deadlines, the company failed and both Morris and Nicholson ended up in debtors’ prison from 1798 to 1801. An interesting link between the Financier of the American Revolution and his eventual economic failure.
