This antique Victorian era short cape is from the 1890's. It is black silk velvet with soutache embroidery all along the bottom. It has a high upturned collar trimmed on outside with passementerie trim or embroidered trim and finely pleated silk ruffles. The inside of the collar is seen as it stands up and has a yellow cotton lining with thick rich beige lace the ends of the collar has layers of valenciennes lace and black tissues silk. With the collar turned up the look is very dramat...ic. The inside is lined the top withthe beige lace which is sewn to it is new and replaced silk. The silk below a different yellow is totally shot and does need to be replaced as it is very stiff. Someone put a pc of take on one of the big splits. There is also a thin wool layer under the damaged lining. There is a large eye hook at the top for closure.
Measures- 20 inches long, 16 inches shoulders, neck is about 18 and about 25 inches across middle chest. Shown on form with 34.5 inch bust and 15 inch shoulders
Condition is good . Inside lining top with beige lace replace by a newer pale yellow cotton - some of lace ends undone. Not a real problem. Lining below totally shattered and needs to be relined.
Some of the embroidered silk threads that are on the flowers and medallion around the bottom is worn off. See pics.
